Condolences

Longtime area Street Rodder Nick Cody passed away. Though not a member of KARC, Nick was a friend to many. Please keep Nick’s family in your thoughts and prayers.

KARC Super Cruise and Wilderness Trail Rod Run

Please try to collect sponsors’ payments and get them in. Thanks to all those that put in the time and effort to secure sponsors. It wouldn’t possible, or a successful show without your efforts.

Member Machines and Gossip

Many thanks to Sid, Dick and Charlie Ball for much of the following info and pictures.

KARC  treasurer, Mark Warner, likes to stay busy and, consequently, is working on 3 projects  at the same time. He has just replaced the engine in his 57 Chevy 2 dr. hardtop, with a fresh 350, after the initially installed 350 developed a few technical problems.  Mark had already replaced the original 3 speed with a 700R4. Sitting alongside the 57 is a 54 Chevy 2 door, which Mark has already installed a MII suspension, and has started paint stripping and body work.  Over at the ranch house is a 60’s International Scout with a good bit of paint and body work already completed.   Project #3 is a vintage Shasta camper.  Mark has restored and painted the outer skin and plans to restore the interior and use it for its original intent, as in camping.  Just in case boredom sets in, a 51 Chevy pickup is waiting patiently for its turn with the Warner Mig and wrench.

Perry Stapleton’s 67 Nova is out of the paint shop with a really slick silver paint covering everything.  Recently several KARC members,  along  with Gate City and Yuma, VA hot rodders, gathered at Bruce Roberts’ old Yuma Tire shop, where the Nova  is hiding out. This large group of  helpers” were there to complicate the installation of the Corvette Z06 LS1 engine with matching 4L60E trans.  With Perry’s expert guidance the engine and trans were eventually sitting down in that new TCI front suspension. TCI LS conversion engine and trans mounts were used, and over the course of a few days , Viola, the Nova had its new hi-tech, bulletproof running gear. The brakes have been plumbed. The Nova also has a 9 inch Ford rear nestled up into a TCI rear suspension setup.  All  of this is to accept that new GM power and transmit said power to the asphalt.

Pics of the crew working on the Nova. Is one member supervisor, or just tired…..hmmm. Nice build Perry!

LS crank pullies are really hard to get off. After the better part of a day of rasslin' and loud talking it was taken to Keith Owens' shop where it was promptly removed. On that trip to Keith Owens’ shop, a fresh Ford 302 was spotted sitting nearby.  It had just been decked and had new Keith Black pistons already installed.  Turns out this engine is destined for Daris Hartsock’s 35 Ford coupe.

A few months ago, KARC member Bill Pettis found and purchased a survivor 32 Ford 2 dr. sedan.  Bill had been looking for one of these for many years, and was ecstatic to have found it. Shortly thereafter he came across a 40 Ford Flathead that had been recently rebuilt.  Bill partially disassembled the Flattie and sure enough, it appeared to be fresh.   About a month ago Bill got the Flattie running, and it sounded good, so Bill took it for the required spin around the block, found out the engine ran well, but the 32 might need brakes, just in case stopping was ever required.  Bill tore into the brakes and, after suffering from “new parts ain’t necessarily good parts” syndrome, Bill now has new brakes on his 32 and is ready for the next step.

Mike Smith put a Thunderbird steering rack and reconfigured pump in Maynard Ketron’s 37 Ford and a sway bar in Bill Hurd’s Marauder.

Mike Smith, Bill Noe, Rayford Dingus, Daniel Gibson, and Dick Cartwright served as judges for the VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) competition at the Scott County Vocational Center.

Members Mike Smith, Rayford Dingus, Daniel Gibson, Randy and Betsy Bledsoe, Perry Stapleton, David Baker, Ron Baker and Gary Price made the trip to Myrtle Beach for the Run to the Sun. Apologies to anyone I might have missed. This year’s show may have been the biggest yet. The weather was really nice. Ron made a nice buy on a Quadrajet for his 69 Camaro convertible. David’s son Thomas played hooky from school and took turns riding with his Dad, Grandad and Uncle Gary on the way down and back. He also found the trunk of a Plymouth to be a comfortable spot to rest, in the shade. Thomas enjoyed the trip as much as anyone.

Mike Smith and several of our Carolina friends were given the opportunity to participate in a fundraiser for a local charity. They chose to not participate.
